Ingredients
Scale
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 4 large egg yolks
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 4 oz dark chocolate, chopped
- 1 cup heavy cream (for optional whipped cream topping)
- 1 tablespoon powdered sugar (for whipped cream)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for whipped cream)
- 1 1/2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the puff pastry sheet slightly and cut into three equal rectangles. Prick all over with a fork to prevent puffing.
- Place another baking sheet on top to keep them flat and bake for 15–20 minutes or until golden and crisp. Let cool completely.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk until just steaming.
- In a bowl, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, salt, and egg yolks until smooth.
- Gradually pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly, then return to the saucepan.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened.
- Remove from heat, stir in vanilla and chopped chocolate until smooth. Cover with plastic wrap touching the surface and chill until cold.
- Optional: Whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
- Assemble by layering one piece of puff pastry, a layer of chocolate pastry cream, and sliced strawberries. Repeat layers and finish with a top pastry layer.
- Dust the top with powdered sugar and garnish with more whipped cream and strawberries if desired.
- Chill for at least 30 minutes before serving to set.
Notes
- You can prepare the pastry cream a day in advance.
- Use a serrated knife to slice the mille-feuille neatly.
- Substitute dark chocolate with milk chocolate for a milder flavor.
