- 2 ½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cups whole milk
- Gel food coloring (pink, blue, purple, yellow, etc.)
- 4 cups buttercream frosting (homemade or store-bought)
- Sprinkles and edible glitter (optional)
- Fondant unicorn horn and ears (optional, for decoration)
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line three 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in vanilla extract.
- Alternately add the flour mixture and milk, starting and ending with flour. Mix until just combined.
- Divide batter evenly into separate bowls and tint each with a different food coloring.
- Pour colored batters into the prepared pans and swirl gently with a knife for a marbled effect, or layer if desired.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cakes cool completely.
- Level cake layers if needed. Spread buttercream between layers, then frost the entire cake.
- Decorate with fondant unicorn horn and ears, and add sprinkles or edible glitter as desired.
