Swedish Meatballs: A Delicious & Cozy Dish

Swedish meatballs are tender, spiced meatballs served in a creamy, savory gravy, often enjoyed with mashed potatoes or egg noodles for a comforting, hearty meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1/2 lb (225 g) ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp butter (for frying)
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine breadcrumbs and milk; let sit for 5 minutes until softened.
  2. Add ground beef, ground pork, egg, onion, garlic, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper to the breadcrumb mixture. Mix gently until just combined.
  3. Shape mixture into 1-inch meatballs.
  4. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat and cook meatballs in batches until browned on all sides. Remove and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  6. Gradually whisk in beef broth, heavy cream, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Simmer until sauce thickens.
  7. Return meatballs to the skillet and simmer for 10 minutes, or until fully cooked through.
  8. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or lingonberry jam.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the meatball mixture to keep them tender.
  • For a lighter sauce, substitute half-and-half for heavy cream.
  • Lingonberry jam adds a traditional sweet-tart contrast.
