Seared Tofu with Balsamic Glaze

A simple yet elegant vegan dish featuring golden-seared tofu topped with a rich and tangy balsamic glaze, perfect for a light lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 14 oz (400 g) firm tofu, drained and pressed
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup (or agave nectar)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu for at least 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then slice into 1/2-inch thick slabs.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  3. Place tofu slices in the skillet and cook for 4–5 minutes on each side until golden and slightly crispy.
  4. In a small saucepan, combine balsamic vinegar, maple syrup, and minced garlic. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  5. Cook the glaze for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.
  6. Season tofu with salt and pepper, then drizzle the balsamic glaze over the top.
  7. Garnish with fresh basil leaves and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Pressing tofu is essential for achieving a firm, meaty texture.
  • Adjust the sweetness of the glaze by adding more or less maple syrup.
  • This dish pairs well with roasted vegetables or a fresh green salad.
