Easy Sugar Cookies

These easy sugar cookies are soft, chewy, and perfect for decorating or enjoying plain. A simple and classic treat for any occasion.

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • Additional sugar for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract if using.
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients.
  6. Add buttermilk, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough is soft but not sticky.
  7. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls and place on prepared baking sheets.
  8. Flatten each ball with the bottom of a glass dipped in sugar.
  9. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden.
  10. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

  • Do not overbake; cookies should be soft in the center.
  • You can decorate with icing or sprinkles once cooled.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
