Chocolate Strawberry Mille-Feuille

A decadent dessert featuring layers of crispy puff pastry, luscious chocolate pastry cream, and fresh strawberries, the Chocolate Strawberry Mille-Feuille is a beautiful and indulgent treat perfect for special occasions.

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 oz dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for optional whipped cream topping)
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar (for whipped cream)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for whipped cream)
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry sheet slightly and cut into three equal rectangles. Prick all over with a fork to prevent puffing.
  3. Place another baking sheet on top to keep them flat and bake for 15–20 minutes or until golden and crisp. Let cool completely.
  4. In a saucepan, heat the milk until just steaming.
  5. In a bowl, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, salt, and egg yolks until smooth.
  6. Gradually pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly, then return to the saucepan.
  7. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened.
  8. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla and chopped chocolate until smooth. Cover with plastic wrap touching the surface and chill until cold.
  9. Optional: Whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
  10. Assemble by layering one piece of puff pastry, a layer of chocolate pastry cream, and sliced strawberries. Repeat layers and finish with a top pastry layer.
  11. Dust the top with powdered sugar and garnish with more whipped cream and strawberries if desired.
  12. Chill for at least 30 minutes before serving to set.

Notes

  • You can prepare the pastry cream a day in advance.
  • Use a serrated knife to slice the mille-feuille neatly.
  • Substitute dark chocolate with milk chocolate for a milder flavor.
