- 1 3/4 cups (220g) all-purpose flour

- 3/4 cup (65g) unsweetened cocoa powder

- 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar

- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder

- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda

- 1 tsp salt

- 2 large eggs

- 1 cup (240ml) whole milk

- 1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable oil

- 2 tsp vanilla extract

- 1 cup (240ml) boiling water

- 1/2 cup (120ml) sour cream

- 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened

- 1 1/2 cups (180g) powdered sugar (for frosting)

- 1/2 cup (60g) cocoa powder (for frosting)

- 2 tbsp (30ml) milk (for frosting)

- 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)

- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

- In a large bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

- Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients and beat until well combined.

- Stir in the boiling water carefully (the batter will be thin).

- Mix in the sour cream until smooth and evenly combined.

- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.

- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

- Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

- For the frosting, beat butter until light and fluffy. Add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, beating until smooth.

- Add milk and vanilla, continuing to beat until the frosting is creamy and spreadable.

- Frost the cooled cakes by placing one layer on a serving plate, adding frosting on top, then placing the second layer and covering the entire cake with remaining frosting.
