Apple Pie

A classic American dessert, apple pie features a buttery, flaky crust filled with tender, cinnamon-spiced apples. It’s perfect served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cut into small cubes
  • 68 tbsp ice water
  • 67 cups sliced and peeled apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or mix)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp milk (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, salt, and sugar. Add butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add ice water, mixing until dough comes together. Divide in half, shape into disks, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  4. In another bowl, combine sliced apples, sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Set aside.
  5. Roll out one disk of dough and fit into a 9-inch pie dish. Trim edges.
  6. Fill with apple mixture and spread evenly.
  7. Roll out the second dough disk and place over filling. Trim, seal edges, and cut slits for steam. Alternatively, create a lattice crust.
  8. Whisk egg and milk for egg wash. Brush over crust.
  9. Bake for 45-55 minutes or until crust is golden and filling is bubbling. If the crust browns too quickly, cover edges with foil.
  10. Let cool for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

  • Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for depth of flavor.
  • Chill the dough thoroughly to ensure a flaky crust.
  • Place a baking sheet under the pie to catch any drips.
