Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large egg whites
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- 1/4 tsp cream of tartar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
- Black decorating gel or melted chocolate (for eyes)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200°F (95°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a clean, dry bowl, beat the egg whites with an electric mixer on medium speed until foamy.
- Add the cream of tartar and continue to beat until soft peaks form.
- Gradually add the sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, while beating on high speed until stiff, glossy peaks form and the sugar is fully dissolved.
- Mix in the vanilla extract if using.
- Transfer the meringue mixture to a piping bag fitted with a round tip.
- Pipe ghost shapes onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 1.5 to 2 hours or until the meringues are dry and easily lift from the parchment. Turn off the oven and let the meringues cool inside for 1 hour.
- Once cooled, use decorating gel or melted chocolate to add eyes.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
Notes
- Make sure your bowl and utensils are completely grease-free before whipping the egg whites.
- Humidity can affect the texture of meringues; dry weather is best.
- Add flavoring extracts for a twist (like peppermint or almond).
